SPACE TYPE: Corporate Office

This entrepreneurial company created new office space with the adaptive re-use of an historic cathedral in downtown Newark. Our goal as lighting designer was two-fold: to celebrate original features such soaring volumes, dramatic stone arches, vaults, stained glass and detailed woodwork; and to create a vibrant lighting quality for a workspace interior that suffers from the lack of natural daylight.

Careful placement and selection of lighting instruments is used to highlighting the cathedral’s gothic features: uplighting cross-vaults, accenting ribbed ceiling arches; washing stone walls; accentuating the intricacies of a restored organ screen and wood-paneled ceilings. Careful consideration was also given to integrating task lighting with open workstation layouts while opening the volumes with copious indirect lighting. The considered combination of different source types ensures a harmonious enhancement of both functionality and ambient experience.
