In the heart of the Bronx Campus, the newly imagined McShane Student Center connects old and new buildings through a modern light-filled arcades, creating added space for student activity. The program includes fitness facilities, lounges, meeting, office, event and food spaces, introducing a contemporary design that creates a dialog with the established Gothic style.
Lighting is a key element to bridge the new and old architecture. Glowing light coves and aimed downlights at a 35-foot gallery atrium bring out the featured stone relief, and its textural contrast with the glass curtain wall/skylight. In the arcade, high-power wall washers focus on a historical exterior facade of Rose Hill Gymnasium not only grazing the stone geometries, but also providing the vibrant event/passage space with ambient illumination.
